About Andrea Rota

Andrea Rota (Bologna, c1553 - Bologna, June 1597) was an Italian composer. Almost nothing is known about the life of Rota. After working several years in Rome , he was in Venice , where in 1579 he published his first book of madrigals for five voices, and finally returned to Bologna, where he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Basilica of San Petronio in May 1583 by the Cardinal Giacomo Boncompagni , who hailed him as a "person established in the music ... very good musician composer known for anything else these days, practical teaching havendo more years with much competition held publica downs of schoolchildren." He could then have a big choir consists of 34 singers , 20 of which cherubs singers, instrumentalists and 3 (an organist , a trombonist and a cornet ).
