Ali B Period 2000 - now Genre , Dutch-language Editorial Ali B is a Dutch rapper from Moroccan descent. He combines stand-up comedy with Dutch hiphop and is not only popular with Dutch youths but also welcome guest at various radio and TV shows. BIOGRAPHY 1981 - 2001 Ali Bouali is born in Zaanstad, not far from Amsterdam. When Ali is two he and his family move to the capitol. Ali first comes into contact with Dutch hiphop when he hears the song Moordenaar ('Murderer') by Osdorp Posse. He starts making his own raps. When Ali is fourteen he and his mother and brother move to a town called Almere. After graduating he develops a gambling addiction. But after several odd jobs he brings discipline back into his life and he gives up smoking and alcohol. He also starts working on his musical career by winning the 2000-2001 Poetry Slam. Osdorp Posse 2002 Dressed in a tracksuit and a baseball cap Ali B reaches the finals of the talent contest Wanted. He also reaches the finals of the Grand Prix Of The Netherlands Talent Show in the category hiphop/r&b. He becomes second behind singer and good friend Corey. 2003 Ali B signs to Warner Music. The proceeds of Waar Gaat Dit Heen? ('Where Does This Lead To?'), which he records with singer Karima (ex-Dignity), go to Amnesty International. The song enters the video charts of music channel The Box at number two. Ali B makes a guest appearance at a RZA (Wu-Tang Clan) show and plays various other shows. He can also be seen on TV and in the daily newspapers. Dignity 2004 Ali B's third single Geweigerd.nl ('Denied.nl') refers to the fact that many Moroccan youths are denied entrance to Dutch clubs. The song is included on the album Ali B Vertelt Het Leven Van De Straat ('Ali B Tells About Life On The Street') on which artists like Brainpower, Karima, Cilvaringz, Casablanca Connect, MC Sranang and his cousin Yes-R, guest star. In April Ali B and various other artists of Moroccan descent record the song Life which is dedicated to the victims of the earthquake in Al Hoceima in Morocco. In May the rapper leaves for Tanzania to perform at the B-Connected festival. In September he kicks off a Dutch theatre tour. The song Wat Zou Je Doen ('What Would You Do?') which Ali B and Marco Borsato sang during one of Borsato's shows in June enters the charts at number one in September. The single Ik Ben Je Zat ('I've Had It With You') is a duet with singer Brace. A wax model of Ali B can be seen at Madame Tussaud's in Amsterdam. Ali B also wins the Megaward 2004. Brace Brainpower Marco Borsato Yes-R 2005 Ali B contributes to Als Je Iets Kan Doen ('If There Is Something You Can Do'), a charity single for the victims of the Tsunami disaster in Asia. Ali B also wins the Dutch Popprijs ('Pop Prize') 2004'. Ali B proves that you don't need a record company in order to be successful. He also receives a Zilveren Harp ('Silver Harp') award 2004.
