About 16th State
16th State best falls under the category of “space rock,” a term coined by founder and front-man Jesse Nemitz to incorporate the band’s edgy guitar riffs, progressive rhythmic foundation, and vocals ranging from catchy pop to gritty alternative rock; all laced with socially-conscious lyrics and a message of hope, connection and the power of music to drive deep into the human soul. Each live show is a unique and special experience for fans, who can relate and connect through Jesse’s heartfelt vocals and strong on-stage emotional expression while enjoying the band’s incredible music, pulsing light show, and a true PERFORMANCE unlike anything currently on the Nashville scene. Formed in 2008 by Jesse, David Wilkes and Chris Mercer, the band completed its final line-up in April of 2009 with Josh Hilliker on drums and Chris Gitzke on bass. Jesse and Josh have been best friends for ten years and have played together for almost as long, so their reunion in 16th State has brought an element of cohesion and unified sound, while Mercer, Chris and David can play tight with the band or stand strong on their own with some stellar solos. The band recognizes that they sometimes stir up controversy with their unique style and showmanship, as well as some hard-hitting themes like depression and despair in “Heilgenstadt” and combating child sexual abuse in “Vigilante Justice.” Josh says, “We want to address real life issues and concerns, and in turn give listeners a glimpse of hope. We may create some controversy, but we are always going to fight for the things we believe to be right and true.” The guys write, rehearse and promote tirelessly, working to get their music and message out to fans across the country. With unique tactics to increase interaction with their fan base – like September 2009’s “Do Jesse’s Make-Up” Contest – the band makes sure to create a relationship where they are listening to what their fans want and delivering. After hundreds of votes and comments, fans drove from as far as 8 hours away to see the winning make-up design Jesse wore for their break out show at the Mercy Lounge.
