About Spice Girls

The Spice Girls were a British girl group formed in 1994, consisting of Mel B (Scary Spice), Melanie C (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). They achieved substantial commercial success, selling over 100 million records worldwide, and became known for their "girl power" message. The group was a major influence on 1990s pop music, contributing to the teen pop revival and the Cool Britannia cultural movement. The Spice Girls were originally formed by Heart Management, who held auditions to create a girl group to compete with the British boy bands popular at the time. After leaving Heart, they hired Simon Fuller as their manager and signed with Virgin Records. Their debut single, "Wannabe" (1996), reached number one in 37 countries. Their first album, "Spice" (1996), sold more than 23 million copies worldwide and produced additional number-one singles including "Say You'll Be There", "2 Become 1", and "Who Do You Think You Are"/"Mama". Their second album, "Spiceworld" (1997), sold over 14 million copies and included number-one singles "Spice Up Your Life", "Too Much", and "Viva Forever". The albums featured a dance-pop style and promoted female empowerment, with songwriting and vocal contributions shared among the members. The group made their live concert debut in 1997 and released the feature film "Spice World" the same year. The 1998 Spiceworld Tour became the highest-grossing concert tour by a female group at the time, with around 2.1 million attendees. Halliwell left the group during the tour. Following the release of the number-one single "Goodbye" (1998) and a successful 1999 tour, the Spice Girls released their third album, "Forever" (2000), which included the number-one single "Holler"/"Let Love Lead the Way". The group then went on hiatus to focus on solo projects but reunited for tours in 2007, at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, and for the Spice World — 2019 UK Tour. The tours earned awards for highest-grossing live engagements, establishing the group as one of the top-grossing all-female touring acts from 1998 to 2020. The Spice Girls won five Brit Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, and one MTV Video Music Award. In 2000, they received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, becoming its youngest recipients. Iconic elements associated with the group include Halliwell’s Union Jack dress and the nicknames assigned to each member by the British press. By May 1998, their endorsement deals and merchandise were estimated to have generated between $500 and $800 million. The group officially disbanded in 2019.
