About 김추자
Kim Choo Ja, born 1951 in Chuncheon, is a legendary South Korean singer who dominated the 1970s with her soulful voice and captivating performances. Known as the "Queen of Korean Soul," she was closely associated with the iconic musician 신중현 (Shin Joong Hyun), interpreting many of his songs and becoming one of his most celebrated protégés. From a young age, Kim showed exceptional vocal talent, easily mimicking traditional Korean pansori. After pursuing fine arts, she shifted to theater and film at Dongguk University. In 1969, she was discovered by Shin Joong Hyun, debuting with 늦기전에 (Before It’s Too Late) and quickly rising to fame with hits like 님은 먼 곳에 (You Are Far Away) in 1970 and 거짓말이야 (It’s a Lie) in 1971. Her sultry voice, glamorous stage presence, and bold fashion made her a sensation, earning her the catchphrase "Cigarettes are Cheongja (a brand), music is Choo Ja." Despite her success, Kim faced scandals, including baseless espionage rumors and a brutal 1971 acid attack by a manager, which left her hospitalized. Miraculously, she returned to the stage just days later, bandaged but determined. However, the 1975 "Purification Movement" (a government crackdown on "decadent" music) and false drug allegations forced her into early retirement. After marrying in 1981, she left the spotlight but made a triumphant return in 2014 with a new album and concerts, proving her enduring artistry.
