黒猫チェルシー (Kuroneko Chelsea/Black cat Chelsea) is a Japanese alternative/garage rock band formed in March 2007 in Kobe. They have been on hiatus since October 2018 and disbanded in May 2024. Watanabe Taichi and Sawa Ryuuji continued as "黒猫CHELSEA". Members (黒猫CHELSEA): Vocals: 渡辺大知 (Watanabe Taichi) Guitar: 澤竜次 (Sawa Ryuuji) Support bass: 藤本ひかり (Hikari Fujimoto), since 2024 Support drums: 大谷ペン (Pen Otani), since 2024 Former members: Bass: 宮田岳 (Miyata Gaku), from 2007 to 2018 (officially left in 2024) Drums: 岡本啓佑 (Keisuke Okamoto), from 2007 to 2018 (officially left in 2024) Kuroneko Chelsea was formed in March 2007 in Kobe by Daichi Watanabe, Ryuji Sawa, Gaku Miyata, and Keisuke Okamoto. They began their live performances at local venues such as Kobe Mersey Beat and Back Beat. In 2008, the band appeared on the Nippon TV music program "Oto Moe!" after being recommended by a local live house. On November 2, they held their first one-man show, titled "Kuroneko Chelsea Hotel." In 2009, after graduating from high school, the band moved its base to Tokyo. On April 8, they released their first mini-album "Kuroneko Chelsea" nationwide through UK.PROJECT/DECKREC. That summer, Watanabe was selected from over 2,000 applicants to make his acting debut as the lead in the youth film "Shikisoku Generation," which was released nationwide. On October 12, they organized their own event, again titled "Kuroneko Chelsea Hotel." In December, they held release shows in Kobe (December 13) and Shimokitazawa (December 19), and released their second mini-album "All de Fashion." In 2010, they held a two-day event of "Kuroneko Chelsea Hotel" on January 30 and 31. In February, they embarked on their first nationwide tour, covering eight cities. In March, Watanabe received the Japan Academy Prize for Best New Actor for his role in "Shikisoku Generation." Around the same time, the band announced their major label debut. On March 20, they hosted another self-produced event, "Kuroneko Chelsea Hotel Bekkan." On May 26, they released their first major-label item "Neko Pack" through Sony Music Associated Records, followed by a seven-city tour titled "Neko Pack Tour." In November, they launched a three-city solo tour in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya called "Kuroneko Chelsea’s Manifesto Tour." In 2011, the band planned a twelve-city pre-album tour in spring, but some shows were cancelled or rescheduled due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. In the same month, they played their first overseas shows in Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. On May 25, they released their first full-length album "NUDE+." In June, they held a twelve-city solo tour named "NUDE+ TOUR." On November 2, they released their debut single "Anagura." In 2012, the band launched their new event series "Mousaikekkan GIG" with the first show held at Kobe VARIT. in June. In 2014, they released their first best-of album "Cans Of Freak Hits" in April. In December, they collaborated with OKAMOTO’S on a special event titled "Music History Greatest Golden☆Hits Lab Seminar Kenkyujo." In 2015, they appeared at the ARABAKI ROCK FEST. in April as a joint act with OKAMOTO’S. In August, Watanabe starred in the NHK morning drama "Mare" and performed in a fictional band within the show called "little voice." Under the same name, they released a CD and toured four cities—Yokohama, Kobe, Nanao, and Shibuya—between August and September with the tour titled "little voice presents Kuroneko to Iku Tagiimare na Tour." In October, they moved from Sony Music Associated Records to Sony Music Records. In 2016, they released their first single after the label change, "Goodbye," on February 3. The track "Unlucky Girl," which was featured in the spin-off of "Mare," was also included. In 2018, on June 5, the band announced they would go on hiatus after the final show of their tour "Kuroneko no Ongaeshi" on September 30 at Kobe VARIT. Due to a typhoon, the final concert was postponed to October 16, when they officially went on hiatus following the show at the same venue. In 2024, on May 28, it was announced that Gaku Miyata and Keisuke Okamoto had left the band. Kuroneko Chelsea would continue under the new name "黒猫CHELSEA" as a duo consisting of Daichi Watanabe and Ryuji Sawa. Each member has been involved in a variety of activities. Since the beginning of 2023 year, the four members - Watanabe Daichi (Vo.), Sawa Ryuji (Gt), Miyata Gaku (Ba.), and Okamoto Keisuke (Dr.) - have been rehearsing and discussing the restart of the band, but as a result, Miyata Gaku and Okamoto Keisuke have decided to leave Kuroneko Chelsea. Daichi Watanabe and Ryuji Sawa have decided to start a new band called "黒猫CHELSEA" with support members Hikari Fujimoto (bass) and Pen Otani (drums). They were signed to these labels: UK.PROJECT (2007 - 2010), Sony Music Associated Records (2010-2015), Sony Music Records (2015-2018). They're now signed to Glass Family Record/Sony Music Records. On May 29th 2024 they released their first single as 黒猫CHELSEA called "きらーず" (Killers).
