About 里国隆

Kunitaka Sato (family name: Kunitaka; Japanese: 里国隆; 1919 - 1985) was a blind street singer and musician from Amami Ōshima (Amami Island), Japan. The Amami Islands form an archipelago in the Satsunan Islands, which is part of the Ryukyu Islands, and is southwest of Kyushu. Sato Kunitaka played sanshin and the harp-like san shaku goto (koto). In 1975 Kunitaka released the only LP during his lifetime 奄美の哭きうた, which was out of print for decades until a rerelease in 2006. He died on June 27, 1985 in Naha, Okinawa. It wasn't until the release of the posthumous album "A Street Singer from Amami" in 1996 that much interest developed in him outside of his native Amami island.
