About Гарри Гродберг
Garry Grodberg, one of the most prominent Soviet and Russian organists of the 20 c., was born on 3 January 1929 to the Jewish father Yankel Grodberg and mother Rosa Grodberg (maiden name - Strazh) in Klaipėda, the former German city of Memel, since 1923 incorporated in Lithuania. Soon after the family of the 10 y.old Garry moved to Kaunas the beginning of the WW2 interrupted the normal order of things and made them re-locate once again to an obscure and small town of Namangan in Uzbekistan, this time as refugees of war. There he continued to receive his early musical education under the guidance of a professor of Minsk Conservatory, a refugee just like Garry. Later he was admitted to Moscow Conservatory where his instructors were Alexander Goldenweiser, pianist and Alexander Goedike, organist - each a notable figure in the Soviet Union in their respective field of activity helping to raise several generations of musicians with a mark in the art of performance of 20 c. After he completed his piano and organ studies in 1955 he was promoted to the soloist of Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra with his solo debut following soon thereafter. Grodberg formed recurring collaborative acts with other musicians, among them were such formidable performers as cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, conductors Evgeny Mravinsky and Kiril Kondrashin. Further events in his public life were set in motion with the appointment to the position of Deputy Chief of the Council of Organ affairs under the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. This allowed him to get the number of operational organs in the Soviet Union which could be used as concert instruments to far above 7 units (with 3 of them in Moscow) available for performers by the beginning of his tenure, including but not limited to the installation of the organ build by the Czech firm “Rieger-Kloss” in 1959 for the Piotr Tchaikovsky Concert Hall of Moscow Conservatory. Garry Grodberg was an acclaimed performer of works by J.S.Bach, W.A.Mozart, F.Liszt, F.Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, C.Franck, C.Saint-Saens, J.G. von Rheinberger. His soaring fame was solidified by him playing the entire cycles comprised of pieces by D. Shostakovich, A.Khachaturyan, N. Slonimsky and others. Deutsche Welle Radio sponsored the release of the compact disc series titled “Garry Grodberg plays” encompassing the legacy of J.S.Bach, A.Khachaturyan, L.C. Daquin, F.A.Guilmant and L. J. A. Lefébure-Wely. Grodberg is credited with authorship of the specification used as a basis by the Austrian firm “Rieger Orgelbau” to engineer and build the organ for the Church of St. Franciscus in his home city of Klaipėda. His titles include honorary member of Leipzig Bach Society and German Handel Society. He constituted the festivals “Bach liturgy” in Kaliningrad and Bach Festival in Tver (both in Russian Federation). Died on November 10, 2016, buried in Vagankovo cemetery (Moscow).
