Δημήτρης Λάγιος

About Δημήτρης Λάγιος

Dimitris Lagios (7 April 1952 – 11 April 1991) was a Greek composer and musicologist from Zakynthos. Rooted in the rich Ionian tradition of his home island, he became known for his lyrical musical settings of poetry by Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos, along with his loving preservation of traditional Zakynthian cantades and serenades. He worked closely with Giorgos Dalaras on several projects, most notably the 1982 album O Ilios o Iliatoras and the posthumous Ina Ti with the vocal ensemble Diastasi. A dedicated researcher and teacher, Lagios founded the Kalveio Music School and study centre on Zakynthos and later became deeply involved with Cypriot music and causes. His sensitive, poetic work left a lasting bridge between Greece’s literary heritage and contemporary song, even though his life ended far too early at the age of 39. His deeply personal choreodrama Erotiki Prova, released in 1991 shortly after his death as his swan song, draws on his own poetry with standout performances by Dalaras.
