Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, author and actress. She is known for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, prolific songwriting, and frequent use of the whistle register. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her 4th on its list of the greatest singers of all time. Carey rose to prominence with her debut album "Mariah Carey" (1990). She became the first artist whose first five singles reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, beginning with "Vision of Love" and continuing through "Emotions", the title track of her second album "Emotions" (1991). She achieved international commercial success with the albums "Music Box" (1993) and "Daydream" (1995). In the mid-1990s she began incorporating hip hop elements into her music, notably with the remix of "Fantasy" featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard, a direction that continued on the albums "Butterfly" (1997) and "Rainbow" (1999). During the 1990s she recorded a series of US number-one singles and was named Billboard’s Artist of the Decade for that period. After a commercial decline in the early 2000s, she experienced renewed success with the album "The Emancipation of Mimi" (2005). Carey has often been associated with Christmas music, particularly the album "Merry Christmas" (1994). Its lead single, "All I Want for Christmas Is You", has become one of the most commercially successful holiday songs and has spent multiple weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside of music, she co-founded the youth programme Camp Mariah in 1994 and has appeared in films including "Glitter" (2001), "Precious" (2009), "The Butler" (2013), and "The Lego Batman Movie" (2017). She also served as a judge on the television programme "American Idol" in 2013. Her memoir "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" (2020) reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list. Carey is among the best-selling music artists, with estimated global sales exceeding 250 million records. She has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has received numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards, ten American Music Awards, nineteen World Music Awards, fourteen Billboard Music Awards, and the MTV Video Music Award for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Time included her in its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2008. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist, with nineteen. Songs including "One Sweet Day" and "We Belong Together" were ranked by Billboard as the most successful songs of the 1990s and 2000s respectively. In the United States, several of her recordings have received Diamond certification.
