About Young sensation

Young Sensation formed in late 2007. Their songs present a potent mixture of escapism and confrontation, so moments of bright melodic pop are accentuated by idyllic lyrical imagery. However, this can often run headlong into moments of discordance and dissonance, with more pointed/ potent lyrical content. Thematically, this has produced songs such as first single “Beautiful Noise”, which moves from referencing William Blake’s “London” from his “Songs of Experience”, to much more optimistic ground: “from the bottles and the brothels lying in the streets, To the marks of weakness in the faces I meet… But the kids are dancing… Dancing around to a brand new beat!” Second single, “Kitty Magic”, highlights the fact that the escapism is actually the actions of a protagonist, therefore in a sense not someone running away from a situation, but someone running towards something, there is a greater sense of control: “When we meet we play our guitars out of tune, So we can begin to empty this stupid room…” It becomes obvious later in the song that the place/ space which the protagonist seeks is actually only physical in a metaphorical sense and indeed the need for a home is more a mental/ attitudinal issue- it is the search for oneself and like minded souls: “Waiting for a place which I can call my home, Waiting for a place which I can call my own, Waiting for a place which I can call my home, …You said I can be someone!” Ultimately the song acts as a near call to arms, as if a cry to cut “through all the crap”: “We don’t need no… part-time punks… part-time poets… part-time no-bodies!” Live the band capture the imagination of their songs through the use of smoke, light and bubble machines. Andy Death’s frantic, desperate vocals are often offset by the harmonies of Ollie and Kiri. Recently the band have taken to more flagrant antics, whereby improvised songs are played out toying with elements of both pop and atonal jams. Andy Death has taken to singing and dancing on tables and chairs right in front of the audience whilst daubing himself in make-up. In their short time together Young Sensation have supported the likes of Idlewild, Blood Red Shoes, So So Modern, the Seminfinalists, Make Model, the Twilight Sad, An Emergency, Cheeky Cheeky and the Nosebleeds, Thomas Tantrum, Lonely Ghosts, Munch Munch, etc… They have recorded with Andy from Stereolab, been mixed by Paul Tipler (Elastica, Placebo) and have been keen to promote local talent employing local friends and artists to design cover art and make videos for them….
