About Urban Notion

Urban Notion is a Drum n Bass collective based in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a shared passion for producing world-class original material, as well as fostering the burgeoning local scene. In a brief time, UN have gone from a group of young DJs with a vision, to an experienced production, performance and promotion team who are making a big impression – at home and abroad. It began 5 years ago. Inspired by the broad range of talent around them, DJs Switch, Rufio and Gamble began Urban Notion club nights. Hundreds of successful events later, UN’s knack for showcasing NZ talent alongside the biggest names in the international touring arena is redefining the live Drum n Bass experience for followers everywhere. As performers, Urban Notion are an experienced crew with depth and versatility. With a repertoire that spans the Drum n Bass spectrum, and the unique aspect of a live saxophone and MC combo, UN don’t pander to prescribed set formulas or subgenres. This approach has impressed audiences around the globe – UN members have played across USA, Asia and Australia. Last year, they embarked on a comprehensive tour of Europe which included a billing at DJ Friction’s Shogun night at The End in London. Increasing numbers of industry greats are taking note - last time Goldie saw UN perform he flew them to Sydney the following week to play at his 40th birthday celebrations. 2007 welcomed the release of Urban Notion’s first international 12 inch, Tora Bora/On the Southbound on Total Science’s Advanced Recordings. Their tunes have quickly become a celebrated part of leading Drum n Bass culture, with a number of respected international DJs such as Bailey, Goldie, Total Science, and LTJ Bukem dropping UN sounds into their sets. The production of original material is where Urban Notion currently has its focus – 2008 is set to be another great year for the group, and further material is primed for release in the coming months. Urban Notion’s next 12-inch is set to drop on German-based Phunkfiction recordings and releases on Goldie’s Rufige Label, a 12 inch on Progress Ltd and a follow up release on Advanced Recordings are planned for the near future. Also on the agenda is the continued promotion of events around New Zealand, and producing Urban Notion’s weekly radio show – broadcast on RDU98.5FM. Urban Notion are an energetic collective, always expanding their sound and delivering it to their enthusiastic - and often sold-out - crowds at every event, and attracting new listeners with each release.
