About Unfortunate Sons

“Okay, I think I’ll give this band thing a shot” Those were the words of vocalist and songwriter Jakub Szyszka spoken to his friend and long time fellow musician Michal Dyrda on New Year’s Day 2018 just a few moments after midnight after drinking a mouthful of some cheap champagne ripoff. Little did anyone know, that became Jakub’s first-ever New Year’s Resolution that he’d follow through on. Unfortunate Sons started of as Jakub’s bedroom passion project in which he delved into the wild world of the 90s Seattle Grunge scene with a quest to find his own voice and new musical identity after years of playing guitar in numerous metal bands in Wrocław, Poland. Contrary to his underwhelming low expectations of “gaining 100 streams or video views”, early demos would fuel the interest of fellow Wrocław-based musicians that would openly ask Jakub if they also can join the band. A quite unexpected, but extremely positive twist of faith for a musician that decided to start singing as his last resort for being able to form his own band... That’s how Unfortunate Sons turned into a power 4-piece of: Jakub Szyszka - vocals, songwriter Michał Dyrda - drums, mix, mastering and production Kuba Bagiński - bass Kuba Parzyński - lead guitar, backing vocals 2019 was the year when the snowball started rolling when the band’s first single “Know You Too Much” gained a lot of traction among younger grunge fans. Upon discovering the band, fans from all over the world would send private messages and comments to the likes of: “Grunge is back!” “I’ve been waiting for this sound since ‘91” “wow, I’m so glad I’ve found you guys!” Which added fuel to the DIY band to release more songs and refine their songwriting and performance crafts at rehearsals to hopefully, one day, play their songs live to their most loyal fans from the US, Australia, Turkey, Latin America, and Europe. 2020 was a true kickstart for the band when their 3rd single Nowhere To Stand was placed on New Music Friday (PL) on Jan, 10th which was a huge success for a completely independent band. The next release All in Me solidified the band’s position among today’s new grunge bands (also referred to as Post-grunge) with a back-to-back editorial placement on New Music Friday. If you were to ask Jakub to choose the albums that shaped his grunge identity and gave him the fuel to revive this landscape-changing genre, here’s what he states: Dirt by Alice in Chains Superunknown (20th Anniversary) by Soundgarden Temple Of The Dog (self-titled) Down On The Upside by Soundgarden Jar Of Flies by Alice in Chains Join Unfortunate Sons on their journey from “a band that wasn’t supposed to be” to a full-blown rock revelation.
