About Ulzhan Baibussynova

Ulzhan Baibussynova (Улчон Бойбусунова) is one of a small number of Kazakh women to publicly perform the zhyrau repertory of both short and long epic poems. Zhyrau are Kazakh bards who use a raspy, guttural vocal timbre to perform various genres of oral poetry, accompanying themselves on the dombra, a two-stringed, long-necked lute. Ulzhan Baibussynova's inspiration was an older female zhyrau named Shamshat-opa.
