Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union

About Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union

Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union is but one of the many solo outings for irrepressible You Am I frontman Tim Rogers. As the chief singer-songwriter and boss raconteur for one of Australia's finest rock 'n' roll acts, Rogers' fronted You Am I for four studio albums between 1993 and 1998, before embarking on his first solo outing in 1999. What Rhymes With Cars and Girls was released under the Tim Rogers & The Twin Set banner via Ra Records (BMG), reaching #14 in the Australian album charts. Among the Twin Set lineup was Davey Lane, who would later join You Am I as second guitarist, as well as Ian Kitney and Stuart Speed, who would later form the rhythm section for Tim Rogers and The Temperance Union. After touring and promoting the album, Rogers returned to the helm of You Am I, releasing a live album - Saturday Night, 'Round Ten - in late 1999, followed by a new studio album, Dress Me Slowly in 2001. After touring their sixth studio album, Deliverance in 2002, You Am I underwent a brief hiatus, allowing Rogers to concentrate on his solo material once again. Heading into the studio with a reconfigured lineup as Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union, the new band also saw Rogers' solo sound evolve from the Twin Set's country/folk sound to something more akin to his rock 'n' roll roots. 2004's Spit Polish featured Shane O'Mara (guitar), Stuart Speed (bass) and Ian Kitney (drums/percussion), as well as guest vocals from Lisa Miller on the track Damn Songs. Rogers' lyrical concerns ran the gamut, from being a fish out of water in the suburbs of Madrid to rock and roll excess (at both ends of the business), namechecking everyone from Gene Simmons to Natalie Wood in the process. The album reached #52 in the Australian album charts. This was quickly followed by a double album Ghost Songs/Dirty Ron in 2005, on which the Temperance Union lineup was complimented by guest vocalists Donna Simpson, Rebecca Barnard and Missy Higgins. This time around, Rogers' familiar lyrical obsessions were leant to nine acoustic outings on the Ghost Songs disc and ten raucous numbers on Dirty Ron. The album reached #48 in the Australian album charts. Sadly, long-time Rogers collaborator Stuart Speed passed away shortly after the release of [i[Ghost Songs/Dirty Ron, he was replaced in the Temperance Union's touring lineup by Pete Lawler. In 2006, the same year that You Am I released Convicts, their seventh studio album, Rogers teamed up with Aussie rock compadre, and The Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea frontman, Tex Perkins. Tim Rogers & Tex Perkins (aka T'N'T) released My Better Half, a bawdy, lo-fi, self-deprecating exploration of their iconic rock personas. The T'N'T project was swiftly followed by Rogers' fourth solo album, 2007's The Luxury of Hysteria, released on Rogers' own Ruby Q label. Despite being the first solo album attributed to Rogers alone, much of the album was recorded with the Temperance Union lineup of O'Mara/Kitney/Lawler, as well as 67 Special's Louis Macklin on piano and string and brass accompaniment. Late 2008 saw Rogers launch headlong back into the You Am I, with the band releasing their eight studio album, Dilettantes, in September. http://www.myspace.com/timrogersband
