About The Walnut Street Project
The Walnut Street Project formed in the fall of 1998 in Meadville, PA. Alan Higby started the band by recruiting Chris Moore (from the local band Slander) to play drums and Troy Messerall (from the local band Silver Depth) to play guitar. Diana Babbitt joined the band as the vocalist and the line-up was rounded out by bassist Jeremy Gracik. Everyone was a junior in high school at the time except for Jeremy, who was a senior. The band played its first show on April 3, 1999. The band recorded for the first time on May 31, 1999 with Greg Knowles in Alan’s living room. The 6-song demo tape Spaces For My Dreams was released shortly thereafter. In July, the band went to Mud Hut Studios in Sharon, PA to record their debut album Every Town with Bill Dodd. The album was released on vinyl by Chumpire (Greg Knowles’s label) and on CD by Dance Explosion Records (the band’s own label). When Jeremy left for college that fall, Greg Knowles filled in on bass and eventually became a member of the band. The band recorded their second album Magic In Patterns in July 2000 at Mud Hut Studios. The album was released on CD by Chumpire and Dance Explosion Records. Everyone went off to college and the band continued to write songs and play shows (at a much slower pace). After another change of bass players (Nick Warren joined), the band recorded their third album This Is Just A Conversation Piece in July and August of 2002 with Shawn Hammer at Hammersound Studio in Edinboro, PA. Just after the album was completed, Diana left the band. Alan moved to lead vocals and Nate Zuzack joined the band as a guitarist. The band played just one show with this line-up before disbanding in early 2003. After the band broke up… * Alan recorded and released a solo album under the name The Dance Explosion. He continues to work on music under that name. * Troy continued to work on his solo project, The Experiment Of One, and he joined The Twirpentines. After The Twirpentines broke up, he and singer/guitarist Fred Oakman started the band Signal Home. Signal Home is currently on hiatus and Troy continues to write and play music with The Fire Solution. * Chris joined the band Solara with members of the band Weatherfield. They recorded an EP and an album and broke up. He is currently playing drums in The Blacklist. * Nate started the band Juniper Tree, who have since broken up. * Nick was in the band Hank Jones and he is currently playing guitar in Gone For Six. * Greg continued his trend of playing in noisy hardcore bands (see Ox, Ding, Buttercup, Chase Squad, etc.) by starting Foxhole (with Troy) and he is currently playing guitar and singing for Florence & Libby.
