About Randy Austin & The Throwbacks
Randy is a journeyman guitarist with a rich sense of the absurd from the Washington, DC area by way of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, now living in Baltimore. Very versatile, he plays solo- country, standards, classical, jazz, surf... and with many other estimable bands and musicians including The Throwbacks, whose work is featured here. He was in the legandary Overkill, back in 1976 who are credited in Dance of Days by Mark Anderson as DC's first punk band to gig. He was in early punk band Project O and he was in The Graverobbers, a fine power pop band with critically acclaimed songwriter Karl Straub in the 1990s and is featured on their first album "Soul Parking". In 2000 he was featured prominently on Donald Keesing's "The Aztec Heart Treatment" and plays in a rowdy garage/psychedelic/pub rock band Dollar Bin with Donald Keesing, C.B. Heinemann and Bob Young from Dogs Among the Bushes. His solo releases include "More Songs About Drinkin', Cheatin' and Trucks". He has played in a number of retro country bands, such as The Slim Jims. His moment of triumph, conceptually, was performing "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground on accordian at Food for Thoughts open mike night with MC Philvis Duarte. Not coincidentally he was the played guitar for the DC Improv Comedy Club for sveeral years. He is an educated musician and has a degree in music from Catholic University in DC. - DonK
