The Magnetic Crotches

About The Magnetic Crotches

Originally formed in 2005 in the affluent town of Valparaiso, Indiana, The Magnetic Crotches were founded on two objectives: making great music, and taking babes. The band's initial roster consisted of James Burnell (drums/vocals), David LeBar (bass), and Sean Houlihan (guitar/ vocals/ harmonica). Drawing inspiration from Acoustic Commando and the dire need for girlfriends, The Crotches would jam for hours in the basement of James' home. Eventually, there was a breakthrough. "Slipkuhnot Tribute", The Crotches first hit, debuted on Myspace in 2005 shortly after the band posted its profile, and received an unprecedented 655 plays over the next 4 1/2 years; reaching high levels of obscurity and neglect. The overwhelming success of "Slipkuhnot Tribute" caused tension between the band's members. Even though "Slipkuhnot Tribute" was such a huge success, they knew they needed another hit single. After an intense three hour session, the band decided their efforts would prove fruitless, and decided it was best to go into hiatus. Even in hiatus, the band stayed close friends. Eventually, new friends were met, which led to Ryan Earl (guitar) entering the scene. One afternoon in 2008, Earl brought over his guitar and the band picked up where it had left off. Amazed that they were able to maintain the same quality they had three years ago, The Magnetic Crotches looked like they would return. After a handful more of jam sessions, LeBar quit the bass. He left the band, citing that he wished to focus more on the upkeep of his classic 2001 Chevy Prizm. The loss sent ripples through the band, forcing them into self-inflicted exile once again. However, Burnell, Earl, and Houlihan vowed to keep up with their respective instruments. Houlihan used the time off from The Magnetic Crotches to pursue a solo career through Youtube. Dropping the harmonica in favor of the guitar, his venture brought him huge national success and the subscriptions of many people scattered across the nation. The dulcet tones of his voice had been honed since the inception of The Crotches, as had his sex appeal. Burnell (now wishing to be called 'Jim') and Earl realized this could leverage a return of the 2005 Myspace music phenomenon, and quickly set out to make it happen. The plan went into action when Earl started appearing in miscellaneous cover videos with Houlihan. This boosted awareness that Houlihan wasn't alone. Burnell focused on drumming, and even picked up the guitar to supplement Houlihan and Earl's endeavors. After the acquisition of Macbooks, the members' musical prowess soared. Earl began recording various musical ideas he had over the year of intense boredom at Michigan State University. With Burnell as a critic, these musical ideas became complete songs, though they were stowed away within the confines of his Itunes playlist for several months. After enrolling at Purdue University, Earl took notice of Matthew Scott (a friend of the band)'s music writing abilities. The two began writing songs of their own. Soon thereafter, Houlihan and Earl began jamming with future bandmate, Joe Arsenault (guitar/piano/drums). In March of 2010, after a few jam sessions with Houlihan, Earl, and the visiting Burnell, Arsenault officially joined the band. The revival of The Magnetic Crotches officially kicked off. The newly constructed Magnetic Crotches have began work on their first album, titled, "Congress Of A Cow". While there isn't an official date for its release, the band is hopeful it will be before 2011. The present makeup of the band is as follows: Sean Houlihan (Vocals/Guitar), Joe Arsenault (Guitar/Piano/Drums), Jim Burnell (Drums/Percussion/Vocals), Matthew Scott (piano), and Ryan Earl (Guitar). The band is currently in search of a bass player.
