About The Golden Bubbles

A disco band in the heart of corn country? A glittering pop ensemble arriving to the little dance hall on the prairie in a white, stretch limousine? With four neatly pressed canary-yellow pearl-button shirts and matching eggshell vests and pants, to boot? The Golden Bubbles have been spinning this magical pop fantasy onto the dusty streets of Minnesota and South Dakota since early 2008. Original songwriting that has caught the attention of Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist Chris Riemenschneider (“It’s fun stuff…full of playful, hyper, tongue-twisty pop verses”) and an effervescent visual appeal have won them gigs at packed street dances, wedding parties, and corner clubs across the Upper Midwest. The Golden Bubbles are a band that steals the spotlight, leaving patrons wondering if what they’ve just seen is for real—or some re-animated, glam rock Lawrence Welk. But the kicker about the band is they ARE for real: and now, after laboring loud nights and long days to perfect their sound, they’re looking for attention on a grander scale. While the band’s spectacular recordings and onstage output are madhouse electric, the G’Bubz are in fact careful songsmiths. Brothers Christopher (piano) and Leo Vondracek (bass) grew up in a long line of small town band directors and channel a viciously original musical upbringing: Chicago, Ben Folds Five, Gershwin, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. College newspapers have described the band’s sound as “glitzy pop from its dungeon in ABBA’s basement” (The Minnesota Daily, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities) and “a confection of pure pop rock goodness” (The Volante, the University of South Dakota). The Golden Bubbles’ 2009 debut LP, “A Good Time Was Had By All,” has been buzzing amongst music blogs (PerfectPorridge, MetroMix), periodicals (Des Moines Register, Sioux City Journal, Sioux Falls Argus Leader, 605 Magazine), and received radio play on South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s “On the Record” and “Rock Garden Tour.” Since their introduction, the band has garnered thumbs-ups and fist-pumps from both audiences and critics; they won an opening slot for Ben Kweller after capturing the 2008 U of M/Radio K Battle of the Bands and spent a month at the World Nomad Pub in Minneapolis for the August MiniSeries, presented by The Onion. Consisting of songwriters Christopher (piano, vocals) and Leo Vondracek (bass, vocals), as well as Jared Fette (drums) and Henry Mikkonen (guitar), the band jumped around geographically while members attended school but has now settled in Minneapolis. Finally all in one place, the remainder of the year into 2010 promises excitement for The G’Bubz as they pursue a national tour and recording contract.
