About The New Formula

From Corby in Northants, the New Formula line-up was Mike Harper, vocals, Martin Fallon, lead guitar, Bruce Carey, bass, Tommy Guthrie, drums and Ricky Dodd, vocals/sax. They released singles on Piccadilly and Pye. Their debut single Do It Again A Little Bit Slower was a cover of a number 18 hit in the States for the long-windedly monikered Jon and Robin and The In Crowd. On August 14th 1967, New Formula had a version of the Berry Gordy/Chris Clark song I Want to Go Back There Again in the final Radio London Fab 40. It was joint number 29 with Truly Smith's (Decca label) version of the same song. Chris Clark, who was one of the few white Motown artistes at the time, also issued her own recording of it. Fab 40 presenter Tommy Vance, who played half of Truly Smith's I Want to Go Back There Again segued with half of New Formula's version, remarked that he thought Truly Smith's was the one destined to be the hit. (Certainly, the song had been written for a female lead vocal.) In February 1965, the group did a six month tour of the West coast of Africa, playing clubs and hotels in Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Monrovia and Senegal. The group was voted best club band in France 4 years running working the Côte d'Azure between 1965 and 1969. Mainly in St. Tropez but also clubs in Cannes, Nice, and Cassis. The group also appeared on TV several times including 'The Lulu Show', 'The Tony Blackburn Show', and 'The Simon Dee Show' all shwn on Saturday night prime time. They were on various Radio 1 shows when Radio 1 had guest bands on some of the afternoon shows. Where are they now? Well, speaking from personal experience, Mike Harper is living in Corby as is Tommy Guthrie. Ricky Dodd sadly passed away a few years ago and Bruce Carey has not been traced. Martin Fallon is living in Spain on the Costa Blanca and trying to pick up the guitar again.
