About The Naked Abstract

The Naked Abstract is a progressive/alternative/rock/experimental project established by two men (Murdock and D-lahn) seeking to expand their musical horizons and branch off onto a softer, more ambient sound that they would refer to as "awesome dinner music", or, as Murdock called it: "DINNERCORE". The duo got the name from their own variation of the word "honesty" during a philosophical discussion the two were having about liars, loyalty, and truth. A "deep conversation", as they would put it. D-lahn (a not so concealing nickname) and Murdock referred to themselves as "washed-up metal heads that wanted to make pretty music instead", their other separate project, A Band That's Better Than Yours (ABTBTY), being almost completely stagnant and any further side projects going nowhere. The duo started soon after the formation of ABTBTY in 2007, with D-lahn providing vocals, guitar, and drum beats and Murdock doing guitar, bass, and synth. The two would occasionally variate upon instruments so as to express different distinctive instrumental ideas on each instrument. They practiced very seldomly, but quickly began writing intricate but odd-sounding material that wouldn't necessarily be categorized as the traditional indie music. Their songs had a very strange mix, boasting similarities to bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Rush, The Appleseed Cast, Copeland, The Smiths, The National, The Fall Of Troy, and other widely ranged influences. The sound was considerably out-of-control in an experimental sense, making it difficult for the duo to directly establish a solid ground of what exactly their music was, with elements of indie, rock, alternative, jazz, progressive, avant-garde, ambient, shoegaze, math rock, trip-hop, pop, and punk all blending into their music in some way. Despite the challenge of concluding a solid sound or style for their music, the duo kept revising and eventually succeeded in producing mildly-acceptable material, with the exclusion of a few minor doubts between the duo on certain songs such as "Star Gazer" and "Reason". Unfortunately, even after the great amount of effort and work put into devising their sound, the duo was short lived, and decided to "temporarily quit" The Naked Abstract (TNA) in the fall of 2008, with an agreement to hopefully return to it at a later time. Later that year, however, Murdock suffered a fatal car accident in January of 2009 while returning home from a New Year's party. Even with the grief of such a tragedy, D-lahn refused to break his word, and decided to continue work on "Imagery" (the debut album of the duo) on his own as a dedication to Murdock. Thus, the album is still in progress and will be released for free download soon.
