Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam (born June 4, 1946), (Telugu: శ్రీపతి పండితారాధ్యుల బాల సుబ్రహ్మణ్యం, Kannada: ಎಸ್. ಪಿ. ಬಾಲಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯಂ, Tamil: எஸ். பி. பாலசுப்ரமணியம்); is a prolific Indian singer and actor. He is also known as S. P. B. and Balu . Early life and background Balasubrahmanyam was born to S. P. Sambamurthy in Konetammapeta near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. He is the second son in a family of three sons and five daughters; his sister S.P. Sailaja is a former actress-singer in Tollywood. Balasubrahmanyam has a daughter, Pallavi and son, S. P. B. Charan. Greatest Singer ..Dedicated to only songs!! .. Career Balusubrahmanyam took to singing as a hobby during his childhood. He developed an interest in music very early in his life, and had studied notations and learnt to play instruments such as harmonium and flute on his own while listening to his father. His father wanted him to become an engineer; this brought him to Ananthpur, where he enrolled for the Engineering course in JNTU. Later he discontinued the course due to typhoid and then joined AMIE. Meanwhile, he also pursued his hobby and won awards at many singing competitions. Interested in music from early on, SPB pursued it with passion. Even during his college days as an engineering student, SPB regularly participated in singing competitions. In 1964, SPB won the first prize in a music competition for amateur singers organised by the Madras-based Telugu Cultural Organisation, and earned his first opportunity from music director SP Kodandapani. From then on, SPB has carried on with undiminished enthusiasm not only as a singer but also as actor, dubbing artist, music director and producer, delighting his fans in all his avatars. Balus first break in Hindi films was Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981). Subsequently, he created history by bagging the National Award for his first song in the first Hindi movie. Band Before he became a full fledged cinema singer, SPB was the leader of a light music troupe that comprised: * Anirutta, on the harmonium * Ilaiyaraaja on guitar and later harmonium * Baskar, on percussion * Gangai Amaran, on guitar Playback singing Balasubrahmanyam made his debut in film music as a singer on December 15, 1966 with Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, a film scored by his mentor S. P. Kodandapani. He has sung in more than five different Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam. He has performed both the popular and classical music of India. For example, the songs he performed in the films Sankarabharanam, Sagara Sangamam, and Rudra Veena were based on Carnatic classical music, and the song "Umandu Ghumandu" in the movie Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavayi was based on Hindustani classical music. He hosts a TV show in Telugu called Paadutha Theeyaga on E-TV, Paadalani Undi on MAA-TV, and a Kannada show Ede Thumbi Haaduvenu on E-TV Kannada and Tamil show Ennodu Paattu Paadungal on JAYA-TV. He also anchors a music show called Sunada Vinodini in TTD Channel. He entered the Guinness Book of World Records for recording the most number of songs.
