About Rosaline Yuen

Australian singer-songwriter Rosaline Yuen is often viewed as versatile performer and storyteller whose unique sound is difficult to pigeonhole. Whether Rosaline is tinkering on her keyboard or strumming the guitar on stage, she can take you on a journey from sweetly soulful songs of longing to quirky, rhythmic, and toe-tapping indie pop. Although Rosaline was trained in classical piano from the age of seven, the artist by her own admission did not particularly excel as a music student and recalls, “I had great difficulty expressing myself through elegant waltzes. I enjoyed playing pieces inspired by animals but every time I’d play a staccato note I’d bounce on the stool. My teacher told me to stop doing that.” It was not until her late teens when Rosaline began composing her own music that she discovered the freedoms of jazz and blues, and also the likes of Nina Simone, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, which appealed to her intuitive style. Rosaline draws inspiration from a wide range of sources and says “I can spend whole afternoons alone in my room listening to Cat Power, Francoise Hardy, Neko Case and Martha Wainwright to name a few off a long list of artists who I admire and respect. But there’s no point in merely replicating sounds. I’ll be writing a song about a pear-shaped relationship. At the same time, the song will slowly take shape in my mind like a short film. Sometimes I think of Jean Luc Godard or Michel Gondry” In 2005, Rosaline made her debut on the Melbourne music scene after playing her first gig on Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Since then this talented songstress has been winning over audiences and critics alike, and has performed at some of Melbourne’s finest music venues including Northcote Social Club, Bar Open, 303, Manchester Lane, The Retreat, The Edinburgh Castle and many more. Rosaline’s highlights include being asked to perform at the New Music Stage at St Kilda Festival (2010), the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (2008) and being a finalist in the Melbourne Fresh Summers Sessions Industry Showcase Competition (2006/07) In 2008, Rosaline released her debut EP Garden worldwide through her own indie label ‘thirtysixbird’ and Green/MGM. Garden received a wealth of glowing reviews including predictions of a fruitful career ahead. In 2009, following the success of Garden, Rosaline collaborated with drummer Ian Kitney (Tim Rogers, Rebecca Barnard) to record a limited edition promotional sampler. Recorded in a little room above the Forum Theatre and at Ian’s home studio in Preston, these three new songs hint at a promise of what’s to come. Although these songs have yet to be officially released on an album, they have already received airplay on stations such as RRR, Syn FM, Joy Fm and 3CR. Rosaline’s song After the Show was also featured on an episode of the popular Australian drama ‘Underbelly: The Golden Mile'. In 2010, Rosaline has retreated temporarily from the live music scene to focus on recording her first full length album at Audrey Studios, which will be released in 2011. "...a debut that hints at a bright future for her." - Cecilia Pattison-Levi, BMA Magazine (10/08) "...exuding a kind of wispy melancholia that definitely comes from the Kate Bush school of tortured artistry. Acoustic soul type number on Love Love Love... is a sweetly soulful paean to; you guessed it, love - reminiscent of a more commercial Joan as Policewoman." - Stephen Bisett, thedwarf.com.au (07/08) "Rosaline has a beautiful emotive vocal style, able to convey the various moods with much purpose and strength. The piano accompaniment adds to her story-telling melodies, inspiring a soul and jazz passion that has the knack of seducing the listener. This is just the beginning of what could be a fruitful career." - Carmine Pascuzzi, Mediasearch: Music, Film and Fashion in Australia (09/08) "Rosaline is a rare talent with a beautiful voice and stunning musical ability, her songs are delightfully catchy delivered with a wealth of emotion" - Will Munn, Rhythm & Booze (UK) (01/07) (-) collapse
