About Puppet History
Puppet History is a YouTube series developed by Shane Madej for Watcher Entertainment. Presented in a dark comedy game show format, Puppet History features a puppet called 'the Professor' (created and portrayed by Madej) hosting a 'friendly' and educational competition between Watcher Entertainment co-founder Ryan Bergara and a special guest contestant. The Professor regales competitors with the story of a particular historical event or figure--told with the aid of additional puppets and figures, as well as through animated sequences--during which they must answer questions and occasionally perform tasks (such as demonstrating a dance move they would use if they were afflicted with the 'Dancing Plague' of 1518). Correct responses (and occasionally incorrect or unrelated responses that amuse the Professor) are rewarded with 'history points', the game's scoring currency. Contestants hope to avoid 'rotten jellybeans', which lower a contestant's total score. Bergara had been the only recipient of a rotten jellybean until the 2020 Holiday Special, in which the episode's guest, Kate Peterman, earned one. The contestant with the most history points at the end of the round wins the title of 'History Master' and is therefore awarded the Coveted Cup of the History Master. In the Season 3 episode 'The War of the Golden Stool', Kate Peterman is awarded the 'Top Banana' trophy. This trophy has so far been won only by Peterman and is awarded to contestants who have won the competition 3 times. In her appearances to date, Peterman has won the competition thrice and tied with Bergara once. To the delight of viewers and chagrin of Bergara, each episode is capped off by a song that ties into the content presented. These songs are performed by a related puppet (also created and portrayed by Madej) which is often an anthropomorphized item (e.g. a big pile of diamonds deconstructed from the necklace at the center of the Diamond Necklace Affair of 1784, or a Donner Lake snowman with a multitude of borrowed organs/bones) . The songs are written and sung by Madej, utilizing different voices and mimicry depending on the item/character the song is written for. Additional musical support and vocals are provided by Patrick Volker. The majority of these songs have been made available for audio-only playback on the Puppet History Soundcloud or for patrons of the Watcher Entertainment Patreon.
