About Powers That Be
From AmRep Forum - "thepowersthatwere Hi, I can solve the mystery as I was the guitar player in The Powers That Be! Wow, it's difficult to believe that the single was released almost 20 years ago. In 1992 Manchester was still dominated by "baggy" indie-dance bands, but "Crude Sound" really helped us to get some attention. We recorded a couple of live sessions for The BBC and played gigs with bands such as The Jesus Lizard, Tar, Seaweed and Alice Donut. (Incidentally, a little-known band called Oasis had their first BBC session broadcast the week before ours went out. What ever happened to those guys?!). Our next release was a track called "Dizzy" on Dipsomania Records (an EP with 4 bands from the North-West of England). Following that we recorded some tracks with producer Chris Nagle (Wedding Present, Killing Joke, Magazine etc) which were destined to be released on another Manchester-based label, but from what I remember they ran out of funds. I still have copies of those songs and we later included them on a compilation CD that we put together, mostly for our own amusement! Due to work/family commitments we were unable to play a proper tour and I guess that is the main reason why we split in '94. Listening to "Crude Sound" now I agree that it does sound a bit "shoegazey" (gulp...those drums are so Manchester!) but I still really like the production by Ian Burgess. I've worked with a couple of other bands since The Powers and I currently play in Punk band (unfortunately it's not Gallows!). I still have the Am Rep t-shirt that Haze sent us with the copies of the single. Great memories..."
