About Pain Of Salvation

Pain of Salvation is a Swedish progressive metal band founded in Eskilstuna in 1984 and led by Daniel Gildenlöw, who serves as the primary songwriter, lyricist, guitarist, and vocalist. The band's music is characterized by riff-based guitar work, a wide vocal range, dynamic shifts between heavy and subdued passages, complex vocal harmonies, and the use of syncopation and polyrhythms. All of the band's studio albums have been released as concept albums, and their lyrics frequently address themes such as sexuality, war, environmental issues, and philosophical questions concerning God, humanity, and existence. The name "Pain of Salvation" was introduced by Gildenlöw in 1991 and has been described by him as representing a balance between positive and negative experiences, as well as a metaphor for setbacks encountered on the path toward a goal. The band originated under the name "Reality" when Gildenlöw formed it at the age of eleven. Early members included Daniel Magdic, who remained with the group until 1997. In 1987, Reality participated in the Swedish music competition "Rock-SM", where Gildenlöw received an award for best vocalist. Drummer Johan Langell and bassist Gustaf Hielm joined in 1990. The band adopted the name Pain of Salvation in 1991 and continued to build recognition through competitions and performances. In 1994, Kristoffer Gildenlöw replaced Hielm on bass, and the group recorded the demo "Hereafter", which led to the recruitment of keyboardist Fredrik Hermansson. The band's debut album, "Entropia", was recorded in 1997 and initially released in Asia before later distribution in Europe and South America. It received positive attention for its stylistic diversity and production quality. Following the departure of Magdic, Johan Hallgren joined as guitarist. The second album, "One Hour by the Concrete Lake", released in 1998, explored darker themes and more complex structures, including topics such as nuclear waste, indigenous rights, and warfare. In 2000, the band released "The Perfect Element, Part I", a concept album examining psychological development from adolescence to adulthood. This was followed in 2002 by "Remedy Lane", a semi-autobiographical work focusing on relationships and personal experiences. In 2004, the band released "12:5", an acoustic recording featuring reinterpreted versions of earlier material. The 2004 album "BE" presented an extensive conceptual work centered on theology and human existence. It was developed over several years and performed live prior to its studio recording. Critical reception was mixed, reflecting differing responses to its conceptual scope and musical approach. Between 2004 and 2013, the band did not perform in the United States due to Gildenlöw's objections to U.S. entry policies at the time. Bassist Kristoffer Gildenlöw left the band in 2006. The album "Scarsick", released in 2007, continued thematic elements from "The Perfect Element, Part I". During this period, the band experienced multiple lineup changes, including the departure of Langell and later bassist Simon Andersson. The albums "Road Salt One" (2010) and "Road Salt Two" (2011) marked a stylistic shift, presenting loosely connected narratives rather than a single linear concept. Around this time, the band participated in Sweden's Melodifestivalen with the song "Road Salt" but did not reach the final round. Further lineup changes occurred between 2011 and 2012, including the return of Gustaf Hielm and the addition of guitarist Ragnar Zolberg. In 2014, Pain of Salvation released "Falling Home", an acoustic album featuring reinterpretations of earlier songs along with new material. During this period, Gildenlöw was hospitalized with a severe bacterial infection, an experience that influenced the 2017 album "In the Passing Light of Day". The band also revisited "Remedy Lane" with a remixed edition and a full live performance release. In 2020, the band released "Panther", preceded by the single "Accelerator". The album continued the band's exploration of conceptual themes and marked the departure of longtime bassist Gustaf Hielm.
