About N. Harnoncourt
Nikolaus Harnoncourt (b. 1929) was born in Berlin, Germany and raised in Graz, Austria. He studied at the Vienna College of Music and was a member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He developed an interest in the historic performance practice of period music, particularly the playing techniques and tonal potential of period instruments. In 1953 Nikolaus Harnoncourt founded the Concentus Musicus ensemble and began recording the repertory from 1500 to 1800. Of particular interest is the J.S. Bach cantata project, recorded with Gustav Leonhardt over a period of almost 20 years. Since the 1978/79 season Nikolaus Harnoncourt has been director of his own Concentus Musicus series of concerts hosted by the Society of the Friends of Music in Vienna.
