About My Cat Drinks Tap Water
My Cat Drinks Tap Water (MCDTW or My Cat) was a group from Townsville, QLD, notable for their noisy dance hardcore sound, often described as "Foals on steroids". The band was started in very late 2007 by founders and childhood friends, Jake McPherson and Kyle Setch. McPherson and Setch would spend their weekends jamming together in Setch's basement and making it very clear to each other it was just jamming and they weren't actually a band. For the best part of 2008 the lineup in MCDTW was very loose, with several different combinations of members, the only concrete members being McPherson and Setch. In early 2008 My Cat self released a home recorded effort entitled the 'My Cat-Demo'. This featured the band's earlier indecisiveness towards a genre. Jake's brother, Daniel, soon began learning bass and was immediately added to the fold, aswell as his school-friend, Joshua Oxley, on keys. This line-up was again shortlived, lasting only their first real gig before Josh left the band to move to Brisbane. Daniel remained in the band and they continued playing gigs as a 3-piece with Jake taking over keyboard duties. One night while practicing for a gig, band friend, Tom Douglas, brought some snacks for the band and was invited to scream for their rehersal. This lead him to quickly become the new member of MCDTW, being a fulltime screamer and partial percussionist, utilising cake-tins, shakers, ironing boards, glocks, anything the band could find to hit. With their most cohesive line-up prepared they continued to play and write material for their next EP. The Burning Horse EP began production during August of 2009. The band would spend the next 3 months recording and fussing over preparing their new EP with the help of fellow musician, Lucas Reid, who would later play guitar for a small My Cat show. Closer to the release of their EP, a second guitarist was saught after to fill in the sound for the planned final show. Patrick Johnson would fill this slot and bring the band into it's best form. After the EP launch the band went on hiatus as bassist, Daniel McPherson, moved to brisbane for University. Since then the band has played 2 very small shows without Daniel. They are now on an indefinate hiatus and do not expect to reform again any time soon. However, in the meantime, they are planning to record the remaining unreleased material. Since My Cat Drinks Tap Water, Jake, Kyle and Patrick now play together in a math-rock band donned, Lopaka. All members are also active solo musicians and work under multiple collaborations with other local Townsville artists, such as Kyle Setch and Huxley. Final Lineup: Tom Douglas, Kyle Setch, Jake McPherson, Daniel McPherson, Patrick Johnson.
