About Musica Reservata
Musica Reservata is a musical ensemble founded in London in 1960 by Michael Morrow, John Beckett and John Sothcott. Michael Morrow and John Beckett became the creative directors. The group's main intention was to rediscover and reinterpret mainly renaissance and baroque music, and since its inception has given recitals throughout the world, undertaken broadcasts and given numerous recorded performances, thus popularising medieval and early modern music. The great asset of the ensemble was the mezzo-soprano Jantina Noorman; as Edward Breen remarks in an article, her “striking use of chest-voice frequently divided critics” . Michael Morrow was responsible for a number of important arrangements, developing a particular interest in European folk music, especially in those of Balkan countries until his death in 1994. The significance of Morrow's work and his approach may be perhaps best described in the words of Catherine Mackintosh, a former leader of the Academy of Ancient Music and later the Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment: “Musica Reservata was the most exciting and original early music group – ever!”. In Morrow's obituary notice, the musician has been called by David Fallows “the clearest case of what they call an original” . Amongst musicians who played for some time in Musica Reservata was, it may be noted, the legendary David Munrow, the latter founder of The Early Music Consort of London and Andrew Parrott, who conducted Musica Reservata in the mid-1970s.
