About 間宮芳生

Michio Mamiya (間宮芳生) is the one of the leading Japanese composers. He started music study by his father and graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1952. After his graduation he studied world music such as Asia's, Africa's, and Scandinavia's folk music. The result of the study appeared in various forms in many his pieces. The most important result was presented in his sixteen "Composition for Chorus" series and opera. His music includes works for chorus, opera, orchestra, ensemble, solo instrument, and Japanese traditional instruments. He was awarded many times like Mainiji Art Award with his Violin Concerto No. 1, Otaka Award with "Two Tablo 65" for Orchestra and Piano Concerto No. 2, and Saltzburg Telvision Opera Golden Award with opera "Narukami." He taught at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and served as a chairman of music department at Takasaki Art College and a professor at the Toho Gakuen School of Music.
