About Maurizio Di Tollo

Multi-instrumentalist, arranger and songwriter MAURIZIO DI TOLLO is also a significant figure within the world of Italian progressive rock having gigged and recorded with several of the current scene's principal artists. During his highly productive career he has worked, primarily as a drummer, with HOSTSONATEN, FINISTERRE, THE WATCH, MOONGARDEN, LA MASCHERA DI CERA and DISTILLERIE DI MALTO. This year found him moonlighting from his other duties on the recently released album by L'OMBRA DELLA SERA, possibly a one-off project. However it was last year that he came to the decision it was finally time for him to tell his own story, with the result that he recorded his first solo album ''L'Uomo Trasparente'' (2012). This is a concept album that reveals the heart and soul of the man, not through the lyrics alone but through the blending of elements of traditional progressive rock with his many other musical influences. The central musical experience consists of a tasteful, modern sound that approaches symphonic prog while embracing other styles. DI TOLLO's own drumming forms the backbone of the music, fleshed out with lavish keyboard arrangements and sundry effects, and his distinctive vocals provide the passion and intimacy at the heart of the album. While DI TOLLO plays a host of instruments on the album he is supported by a number of other musicians including a core band consisting of Agostino Macor (Moog), Christian Marras (bass) and Laura Marsano (guitar). One notable guest is Ksenja Laginja, a young Genoese artist who is involved in research into poetry and its influence on music. In addition to realising the artwork for the album she recites poetry over atmospheric backgrounds on a few tracks. Her involvement fosters a sense of mutual inspiration and helps to promote a dialogue between the prog rock and high art. DI TOLLO is part of the very DNA of modern Italian prog and as such will doubtless have a ready-made audience here on ProgArchives. With ''L'Uomo Trasparente'' he has produced a high quality work that contains all the attributes that fans of Italian prog may look for in an album. On the other hand there are no real surprises for anyone looking for something different, but while ''L'Uomo Trasparente'' doesn't tread any new paths it's sure to be warmly received by fans of the RPI. - seventhsojourn
