About Mateo Calvete
Mateo Calvete, also like Mateo Calvet and Matheu Calbet, (Sariñena?, c. 1596 -? ; fl. 1611-1637) was a Spanish composer and chapel master. Mateo Calvete had to occupy the mastery of the Cathedral of Tarazona intermittently between 1611 and 1616, since he is mentioned as a chapel master of the Cathedral of Lleida during those years:2 on October 2, 1614, Juan Arañés was appointed master of chapel of Lleida in place of "Matheu Calbet" [Mateo Calvete]. He was expelled from Lleida in August 1614 after engaging in an argument during the Salve with the tenor E. Sánchez from his chapel. In October, Lleida's master's degree had already been covered with Juan Arañés. In Tarazona and Lleida, the scarce formality and unenitive life that his bosses would reproach him during his career can already be guessed. After the death of Cristóbal de Isla in 1615, the position of chapel master in the Cathedral of Huesca remained vacant for a year. On February 29, 1616, the cathedral council decided to write to Calvete to offer him the position of chapel master in Huesca. The next we hear about the teacher is from two months later, when he appears in the books of Prepositura de Huesca. On April 1, 1617, he is given permission to be absent for a month and on May 31, he is paid the six pounds that were owed to him for his work of the month. As he did not return at the end of the month, the Cabildo began efforts to find a replacement. After rejecting a Castilian teacher of unknown name and Bartholomé Navarrete of Granada, on September 9, 1618 he was appointed to the position Martín Sanz, from Sigüenza. Between his first stay in Huesca and the second, maestro Calvete appears in the documentation of the Cathedral of La Seo de Urgel as a master of cant on December 22, 1616, a position he obtained by opposition in front of a master of chapel of Montblanch. But it lasted a short time, since on April 21, 1617 the chapter acts mention that Calvete has already left. In 1619 Calvete was appointed chapel master for the second time with a salary of 110 coats of arms, although he had to present the title of the first clerical tonsura to access the rationing position. Despite having appointed him for the second time, the council was not happy with the teacher. In the summer of 1625 he again requested permission to be absent and again, after the end of the permit, he did not show up at the Cathedral, so the Cabildo decided to look for a substitute on August 2 of that year: "a chapel teacher is sought because Mateo Calvete did not have come at the time that he was indicated and that edicts were put." Meanwhile, the contralto Nervaiz carried out the work on an interim basis. On May 13, 1626 Calvete sent a memorial to the council "in which he asks and begs for mercy to be admitted again and for the most part the chapter decided that it is known first than what the bishop has to do with the one who will later the chapter will see what is convenient." It is unknown what Bishop Juan Moriz de Salazar should decide, the fact is that on June 10 it is decided to re-admit the teacher "for three months or less what seems to them in the way it was before and after these will be voted on whether it is to stay or not." Again, it is not known how the situation turned out, but on April 29, 1627 the "lords of the chapter determined that a mud of Falces be recited by a chapel master, with the salary of master Calvete." This is the teacher Urbán de Vargas, who would remain in office until 1629. Calvete was appointed master of chapel of the Cathedral of Pamplona in 1627.1 He had to be ordered a priest in Pamplona shortly after attaining the master's degree. Calvete was admitted for the third time to the Cathedral of Huesca in May 1632. The teacher had not improved his behavior, so on July 1, 1636 he was fined forty shields for not fulfilling his obligations, in particular with the musical education of the infants. Shortly after, he requested a permit to leave and again did not return after completing his leave on September 8, 1636. In October, a new teacher had already been appointed with Miguel de Aguilar. Since August 1636 Calvete appears as master of the chapel of the Cathedral of Tarragona succeeding Pere Bosch, a position he would hold until July 31, 1639. The matter was simple, because between May 1, 1637 and July 31, 1637, Felipe Perelló appeared as a chapel master in the Cathedral. In Tarragona, the organists Jerónimo de la Torre and Bernabé Ximénez de Iribarria coincided. From 1637 the Calvete track is lost. Few works by Calvete are known. There is only one published, Today by means of that veil, a five-voice Christmas carol designed for the ceremony of imposing the veil in a step from novitiy to nun.
