About Marcel Türkowsky
Marcel Türkowsky (b. 1978 in East-Berlin) artist, filmmaker, musichoreograph, performer and curator. Founder (with F. Cavalere) of the program Whistle, Minotaure! curating exhibitions, lectures, and listening salons with Sam Ashley, Erik Bünger, Henry Flynt, Catherine Christer Hennix, Invernomuto, etc... Marcel Türkowsky’s often composted and sedimented sound works relate to his films, fieldwork, installations, scenographies, settings, texts, or stage performances, and usually unfold over long durations of time. He has been building an archive of immersive sonic experiences blending the geopolitical, biocultural, and poetic, as they unfold as a series of stories across the arts that attempt to reconsider the world, driven by the buried ghosts of utopia in his hometown. Growing up as a child in former East Berlin—a state that pursued a socialist utopian project within a tightly controlled political system—he has, since 2005, explored the interrelationships between humans, their natural and artificial environments, collective memory, and the “Other” through also through film, installation, and performance. Verticality, the diffusion of sound, and its ubiquity — music for everybody’s own time — interlink to create sonic experiences across a wide social field beyond the demands of capitalist categorization. Rather than finding solutions, the works seek to create problems: places where aural perception challenges the broad spectrum of perceptive listening, the involvement of space, and the imaginary — asking how one might become a body without an eye, and an ear without a body. Together with Elise Florenty they are looking for stories, spells and curses questioning the power of language and its repertoire of poetic and historic-political weapons. The point of view of the abnormal, the counter-example, the misunderstanding and the «minor» always seems to them the most accurate point of view to adopt in order to express the possibles, the promises and the other positive statements of life. By making stories (oral or written, sometimes filmic, sometimes performed, as during the carnival), men create moments put in brackets of reality in which the participants and thus the facts and the outcomes, of history can reverse themselves, for a short time. If they are not effective, they have the merit to reactivate figures of history, to unfold them. These are these moments of resistances which they want to collect and to crystallize. Marcel Türkowsky ´s collaborations often turn into performances, audio/book projects, installations, curational projects and productive misunderstandings. As a stage performer and founder of many expermental sonic collage groups Marcel Türkowsky has performed internationally with free improvisation, action and psychedelia groups (Snake Figures Arkestra (with Ignaz Schick), Kinn (with Frank Schültge Blumm), Syndicate 8, Wooden Veil, Datashock, Mirror Trance Theater, et al.
