About Majid Kiani
Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1941, Majid Kiani first studied Abolhasan Saba's "Radif" on Santour at the National Liberal Arts School of Music for four years. His teachers were Manoochehr Sadeghi and Mohammad Heidari. Next, Kiani studied part of Mirza Abdollah's Radif under Dariush Safvat and Nour Ali Boroumand at the College of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran. In order to master Habib Somai's method of playing Santour and to learn the remainder of Mirza Abdollah's Radif, Kiani continued to study under Boroumand for another four years. Kiani. then, spent the next three years studying a full course of Abdollah Davami's Radif and Avaz composition under Davami, himself. In order to learn other aspects of music. Kiani studied musicology, with emphasis on eastern music, under Tran Vanke at the Sorbon University in Paris, for three yeas. Performance of Mirza Abdollah's "Haft Dastgah" (Seven Dastgahs or Modes), in the iranian music, is based on Nour-Ali boroumand's interpretation. Boroumand learned Radif fron Ismail Ghahremani who was a student of Mirza Abdollah. Boroumand studied the techniques of playing Santour under Habib Somai for twelve years. Somai was able to play Mirza Abdollah's Radif in an accurate and captivating manner while preserving the nobility and character of Santour. His strokes on Santour were calculated and precise; the melodies were clear, harmonious anxl in accordance with the measurements and standards of Radif music.
