About Max Werner
Max Werner (29 December 1953 – 9 April 2024) was a Dutch vocalist, musician, and drummer. He was best known as the lead singer, drummer, and percussionist of the progressive art rock band Kayak. Werner was born in Hilversum. In 1972 he co-founded Kayak together with keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel, guitarist Johan Slager, and drummer Pim Koopman. He performed lead vocals and mellotron on the band’s first five albums before later switching to drums. He remained with the group until its split in 1982. In 1999 he returned as lead singer for the Kayak album "Close to the Fire". After a short tour in 2000 he left the band again due to health issues. In addition to his work with Kayak, Werner released four solo albums. His 1981 single "Rain in May" reached number 6 in the Netherlands and achieved success in several other European countries. The song peaked at number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1981 and reached number 2 in Germany in September of the same year. In 2005 he performed the song on the German television program "Die Hit-Giganten – die 30 größten Hits und Interpreten der coolen Achtziger". Werner died on 9 April 2024 at the age of 70.
