About Larry Cook

In the early eighties Larry Cook, a.k.a. Maarten Veldhuis, already has a reputation as drummer and bass player with notorious avant-garde bands ‘Morzelpronk’ and ‘ZOG’, led by the Plenty Bros. Dolf and Wouter Planteijdt, when he emerges as the lead singer and songwriter with his own band ‘Grin’, scoring a major cult radio hit with the song ‘You Need A Gun To Blow My Mind’. In 1986 Grin releases ‘A view from the valley’. For some time Veldhuis is back behind the drum kit again, playing and recording with several bands including ‘Morzelpronk’, but in the meantime he is recording his own material in a small studio in his now hometown Haarlem. In the early nineties he is signed to Sony Music and releases ‘The Blue Man Can’. A solo album that soon leads to the formation of a band of the same name, touring and playing major festivals in Holland and Belgium. In 1995 ‘The Blue Man Can’ releases the album ‘Family Fun’ and by now Veldhuis’ unrivalled qualities as a lyricist, are acknowledged by his fellow musicians. Several bands including Wouter Planteijdt’s ‘Sjako!’ and ‘The Flame’ start recording his songs, and ‘The Pilgrims’ release two major hit singles: ‘White Men’ and ‘I can’t resist’, both penned by Veldhuis. Maarten Veldhuis contributes to Dutch cinema working as Scriptwriter and Researcher for the award winning "Van God Los" (2003) (God forsaken) and “Oorlogswinter” (2008) (War in Wintertime). In 2003 Veldhuis records ‘Greetings from Promiseville’ under his new nom de plume Larry Cook. Released by Idol Media/Sony the album is self-produced and for the better part home taped. Cook sings and plays all instruments himself. ‘Greetings from Promiseville’ gains much critical acclaim for its eclectic songs from the imaginary town of Promiseville. Four years later Larry Cook opts for an entirely different approach. He invites a few friends over to Grasland Studio in Haarlem where in a 4 day session some of the finest ranking musicians in Holland create ‘The Love Interest’. ‘The Love Interest’ was produced by Wouter Planteijdt and released by Promiseville Records in 2008. Distribution by Sonic Rendezvous.
