About L-Marie

L-Marie is proving to be one of Scotland’s most valuable musical exports. With a voice as soulful as it is smooth, and an attitude to match, L’s recent efforts have definitely brought the interest she has been waiting for. Brought up in the 80’s, she was musically influenced from an early age with a little help from her mother, who saw something special in her daughter’s musical ability. L was fed a diet of Sting, Bowie, The Beatles, and countless Motown artists from her parent’s collection. This diverse roster exposed L to all aspects of music, from classical to soul, throughout her early years. Studying classical clarinet from the age of 9, further opened L-Marie’s eyes to the possibilities that music could bring, so she pursued this for many years until the realisation came that nothing would ever compare to the passion she had for singing. It was this defining moment that led her to decide to focus on her voice, and with that she took her pen and pad into her tiny bedroom and started to write. From that moment, L began to perfect her craft, singing at any opportunity in and around her home town of Glasgow. She worked alongside different musicians and producers but still she felt something was missing. She decided to go it alone using the mantra ‘If you want something done, you have to do it yourself’. In 2005 L released her first mixtape, ‘Liza Heat’, a combination of soulful songs over bass heavy instrumentals, a concept totally unique and untested, she decided to take a chance and go for the success she desired so intensely. It paid off, and L found herself performing all over the UK with established acts such as Common, Floetry, Faith Evans and De La Soul. This was only the beginning as 2 more mixtapes followed, earning her a strong following in the UK, Japan and Europe. The response to her music was astounding and cemented the idea in her head that a career in music was not only possible, it was imminent. The support just kept coming, from radio, press, and fans alike. This presented opportunities to perform live sessions at Maida Vale for Radio 1, an exclusive Homegrown set for 1xtra, appearances at London’s Jazz Café and Brixton Academy and a finalist position in the prestigious Diesel U Awards. 2007 sees L working on her debut album and finally making the music that has been within her all this time. Here’s what the industry has to say about L-Marie and her ability. Who said Scotland doesn’t have soul?! "Not for nothing, L-Marie is increasingly being referred to as Scotland's First Lady of Soul" Sunday Herald
