About Johann Carl Eschmann

Johann Carl (Johann Karl) Eschmann (1826–1882) was a Swiss Romantic composer and pianist from Winterthur who spent his later life in Zürich. He studied piano in Zürich with Alexander Müller and later trained in Leipzig with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Ignaz Moscheles, before working as a teacher-composer in Winterthur, Schaffhausen, and Zürich. In the musical circles of his time he was connected with figures such as Johannes Brahms (friend and admirer), and was acquainted with Louis Spohr, Theodor Kirchner, and Richard Wagner. Among his published works is the six-movement Fantasiestücke, Op. 3 for horn (or cello) and piano, issued in Cassel and dedicated to his father.
