Jascha Heifetz is considered by many inside and outside the music community as the greatest violinist of all time. Born in Vilna, Lithuania, he was the star pupil of the great Leopold Auer. Even as a young man, Heifetz's incredible technique rocketed him to fame. Many criticized this along with his immobility onstage as cold and unmusical; without feeling. However, Ivry Gitlis said, "Close your eyes! Listen!" In his later years, Heifetz lived in Beverly Hills and taught in master classes.
