About Hasan Ferit Alnar
Ferid Alnar (Hasan Ferit Alnar; * 11th March 1906 in Istanbul; † 1978 in Ankara) was a Turkish composer. He became a virtuoso of kanun,traditional Turkish instrument, at the age of fourteen and he has created his first work at the age of sixteen. Among his works, the most notable work is the concerto for Strings and Kanun orchestra composed between 1944-1951 years. (1906-1978) Born on March 11, 1906 in Istanbul, Hasan Ferid Alnar became recognized as a performer on the kanun while only twelve years old. He continued studying the kanun at the Istanbul Conservatory, and began composing music at the age of sixteen. He studied harmony with Sadettin Arle, and counterpoint and fugue with Edgar Manas. In 1927, with the support of Arel, he entered the Vienna State Academy of Music and the Visual Arts, where he studied composition with Joseph Marx, and orchestral conducting with Oswald Kabasta. In 1932 he began teaching music history at the Istanbul Conservatory. Making use of the makams of Turkish in his compositions, Alnar also taught Turkish music for a time. In 1936, he became assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Prime Ministry in Ankara. He lived for a time in Austria and Germany, where he conducted various orchestras. In 1952, due to illness, he gave up conducting. One of his most-loved works, "Prelude and Two Dances" (1935) contains folkloric themes, and is known abroad as well. Alnars "Kanun Concerto" (1944-1951) holds the distinction of being the first work in which a traditional Turkish instrument was accompanied by a western orchestra. In addition to works of Turkish music such as 10 Saz Semaisi (1926) and Bayâti Araban Pesrev, Segâh Pesrev (1927), Alnar′s works include: Orkestra için Romantik Uvertür (Romantic overture for orchestra, 1932), Türk Süiti (Turkish suite, 1936), Istanbul Süiti (Istanbul suite, 1938), the concertos for cello, kanun and strings he wrote between 1943-51, Trio Fantezi (1929) and Üç Türkü (Three folk songs, 1948) for soprano and orchestra.
