About Gary Peterson

There is more than one artist by the name of Gary Peterson. 1) Gary Peterson is/was a member of The Guess Who. 2) Gary Peterson is a founder member of Shetland (British Isles) band Hom Bru, who have been playing together since 1978. The band currently consists of Gary Peterson (Banjo, Mandolin), Davie Henry (Mandolin, Vocals), Brian Nicholson (Guitar, Vocals) and John Robert Deyell (fiddle). They have played all over Europe. Peterson is a superb mandolinist with a mastery of the music of his native islands. The way he ornaments tunes is a joy to the ear and his use of short bursts of tremolo in place of the triplets others might use is especially distinctive and most impressive. 3.) Born in San Diego, California, Gary Peterson began his love affair with music at the tender age of 4, on the piano. He started formal piano lessons at age 6 and discovered and loved classical music by the time he was 10. At age 15, he got his first guitar and reveled in the freedom of improvisation. In 1963, he went to Paris for the first time, where he started street singing with other musicians from the U.S. At age 21, he decided to become a professional musician. He enrolled at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he met and studied privately with Bill Mathieu. Gary returned to Europe after his studies and helped form the group “Formerly Fat Harry” with Bruce Barthol (former bass player for Country Joe & the Fish), Phil Greenburg, and Laurie Allan. The musicians spent 3 years together playing rock & roll touring throughout Europe and the UK. They wrote their own material and recorded their first album for EMI Records at Abby Road Studio (while the Beatles were there). Peterson moved back to Paris in 1972 and recorded 4 solo acoustic guitar albums of blues, folk, and ragtime. In 1979, the musician moved back to northern California, built a recording studio, began recording other people, and also began writing much more of his own music. Two years later, he moved to Los Angeles and began writing music for film and theater, working with playwright, Eugene Ionesco and Paul Verdier, owner and director of Stages Theatre in Hollywood, CA. After 3 years in Los Angeles, he returned to live in Paris where he recorded 3 more albums with Thierry David of KVOX Records and wrote music for French television, radio, and independent films. From Paris, he moved to Amsterdam for 3 years, spening his time composing and writing for theater. Since returning to California in 1995, he’s been composing, recording, and performing.
