About Drop Kick Jesus
Drop Kick Jesus was started in July, 1997 by KJ Strum, Eric Park, Jay Mower, Ted Goclawski and Brian Paone. The vision of the band was to use keyboards and samples with hardcore music. The band played its very first show in Springfield, MA on a "side stage" at a festival that was hosting Faith No More and Limp Bizkit as the headlining acts. Ken Cmar recorded and produced the debut album, "Splatterguts" in 1998 for Wonderdrug Records (the same label that Staind came from the year earlier). Promoting the album, Drop Kick Jesus went on a handful of mini-tours opening for bands such as Vision Of Disorder, Will Haven, Crowbar, The Clay People, Crisis, Honkeyball, and Tree. Drop Kick Jesus played shows throughout MA, NH and NY during this era, with the largest fan base coming from the Albany, NY area. After the band had exhausted "Splatterguts", vocalist Jay Mower left the band and Brian Paone moved from keyboards to become the new vocalist. After spending three years promoting "Splatterguts", Drop Kick Jesus wrote their second album, "Depress The Heart" with adding Justin St. Laurent on keyboards while Brian Paone moved up to vocals. Already having a loyal fan base in MA, NH and NY, the band caught the attention of Grammy award winning producer Neil Kernon who was interested in working with the band on the second album. Neil Kernon recorded "Depress The Heart" at the end of 2000 in Haverhill, MA and then the band traveled to Tornillo, TX for a week to mix the album at Neil's studio. The album was released in 2001 under the Auslander Records tag, which is a subsidiary of Century Media Records. The album was a growth from "Splatterguts" both musically and sonically. The attitude of the songs had moved away from hardcore and more into electro-metal, using bands such as Meshuggah, Slipknot, Static-X, and Pitchshifter as influences. Drop Kick Jesus expanded their touring to add VT, ME, RI, and PA during the "Depress The Heart" era. During this period, Drop Kick Jesus played with bands such as Bile, Crisis, Tree, Sam Black Church, Grief, Scissorfight, and Unearth. Drop Kick Jesus played a sold out show at New York City's famous CBGB's club, opening for Crisis in December of 2000.
