Among the influences are Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample, Chick Corea, Chucho Valdes, Jamaica’s Monty Alexander, Kenny Barron, and Michel Camilo. Kathy Brown, founder & leader of the of the Kathy Brown & Friends band, categorizes her style of music as World [Beat]; music that people anywhere can appreciate. “It is not just jazz, reggae or pure anything, it is true crossover of different music style”. This world music style she hopes to take outside of Jamaica to places like New York, Canada, Europe, Japan and Africa. At age 5, little Katherine Brown, the daughter of University lecturers, was being tutored in classical and folk music on the piano at home in mid-island Jamaica. Growing up, that insatiable drive to master the instrument led Brown to pursue music as elective in High School (Jamaica) Ivy League College (USA) and during her medical studies at the University of the West Indies. As a composer, arranger Kathy Brown has melded jazz with particular indigenous forms reggae, Latin and afro-Brazilian music that shaped the synthesis of sound and style on her introductory CD.
