About Doug Geeting

Doug Geeting is a wilderness and glacier pilot based in Talkeetna, Alaska. Doug earns his living as a pilot flying the mountains of Alaska delivering mountain climbers, river rafters, gold miners and tourists to some of the most remote parts of the state. He rarely lands on asphalt -- mostly glaciers and river bars. On the side Doug plays at the local pubs and gatherings recording his favorite tunes during the winter months. He was inspired by the movie The Last Waltz and bought an old Gibson harp guitar after seeing Robbie Robertson play one in the film. Doug says, "Soon after, I discovered Michael Hedges, who wrote a harp guitar tune called Because It's There. That song was written for Naomi Uemura who disappeared on Denali (Mount McKinley) in 1982. I was Naomi's pilot and was the last one to see him alive on top of the mountain before he started his descent. Anyway, Michael wrote that for the soundtrack of the movie about Naomi Uemura. I have a cameo appearance in the movie after being asked to do it by Naomi's widow Kimiko. Anyway, I heard that song on a PBS Windam Hill special and watched Michael come on stage with that Dyer of his. It blew me away totally and I've been hooked ever since." Doug's deep baritone and that harp guitar are a distinctive and hauntingly beautiful combination. He has released two solo CDs to date. Between Flights, a collection of blues, folk, country and cowboy ballads, along with a couple acoustic fingerstyle instrumentals was recorded in 1986. Geeting's musical influences include Mississippi John Hirt and friend Ramblin Jack Elliott, who Doug has played with and opened shows for for over the past two decades. This is a solo collection of live and studio recordings. The Alaskan Mile contains Doug's rendition of "Ready for the Storm" and the moody instrumentals "Farewall to Mugs" and "Spur Road Speed King", which won first and second place instrumentals of the year on Alaska Public Radio in 2001. Both of his CDs have flown in orbit aboard the Space Shuttle as part of the Shuttle Juke Box collection.
