About Distance is a way of life
Cristian Ekman is Distance Is a Way of Life. He plays dreamy power pop and krauty shoegaze. He is based in Gothenburg, Sweden since 2009. Before that he lived in Alingsås. Over the years he has been in bands like Tomorrow Comes Early (2010-present), 1969 Armstrong (2005-2007, 2021-present), Bolywool (2004-2011), City Maze (bass 2021), December's Children (1999-2005, 2019-), Homelake (2004-), Valla (2010), There There (2010) and Strange Brew (2000-2003) (a.k.a. Les Petite Connys, Conny's Flowershop, The Ten 100's, Brewmaster... We find many names for those we love). He is influenced by power pop, 60's psychedelia, 90's indie rock, shoegaze, krautrock, dream pop, ambient music, hardcore punk, sludge metal and various bands and artists like Teenage Fanclub, Nada Surf, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, Sonic Youth, Minor Threat, Refused, Slayer, Neurosis, The Byrds, Big Star, Nick Drake and Elliott Smith. He started this project in 2005 in Alingsås, Sweden when he felt that he wanted to do something on his own. He had made a couple of new songs, but felt that they did not fit in with other songs he had written to his other bands. This is basically the reason he started this, and you may call it a solo project or whatever. The songs are often rather basic and sparse, regarding arrangements and production, with vocals, harmonies, layers of guitars, sometimes bass guitar and a tambourine or other means of percussion. DIAWOL first recorded some lo-fi demo songs on a portal studio in the autumn of 2005. A more psychedelic rock song, Journey in My Own Mind was recorded in 2007. Between March and May 2008 he recorded four new songs, these can be found on the Phases EP. Since, he has remixed some of his own songs, mixed and played guitar on his friend Valla's EP's and recorded new EP's and albums with 1969 Armstrong, Bolywool, Homelake and There There. DIAWOL was on hiatus since the summer of 2009 due to many things, but in the end of 2016 (and probably earlier than that) he wrote new songs and still does. New songs have been recorded and will be released. A lot of the new songs are more krauty shoegaze and even some hardcore punk and sludge metal songs, but there is still a lot of powerpop! He released Sunrise/Sundown in March 2022. A two-track krautrock single. The acoustic cover songs EP Gamla Enskede Sessions was released in August, 2022. It contains cover songs by Ramones, Big Star, No Fun At All, Flamin’ Groovies, Nirvana and Teenage Fanclub. New songs was released continuously in 2022. 2023: A lot of new music will be released this year. The instrumental song Traces of Nowhere was released February 3 and the five track instrumental kraut/drone EP An Illuminated Shadow was released April 14. Stay tuned for more releases this year! Since 2010 he's also in Tomorrow Comes Early with his dear friend Jakob Albinsson (Only If You Call Me Jonathan, Buck, There There, Dar Adal, José González and Junip. They recorded two songs in 2012, but are not released yet. 2022: Several new songs are written and will be recorded when they find time off from their families. Soundcloud Bandcamp Spotify
