About David Simnel and the Pimpernels

A crooner for the 21st century. David Simnel is leader of The Pimpernels. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, playing piano, guitar, accordion, dulcimer, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, drums, bass, vibes, marimbas and strings and brass arrangements. Hails from the south coast of England, and spends much time commuting between there and London. Influences range from other crooners like Mel Torme, Johnnie Ray, Jack Jones, Frank Sinatra, Scott Walker, Serge Gainsbourg and the girls too such as Dusty Springfield, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Nancy Sinatra, Shirely Bassey. Grew up in the late 70's early 80's so there is a large influence of Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Marc Almond, Soft Cell, Yazoo, Blancmange, Associates, Billy MacKenzie, Kirsty MacColl, The Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, Altered Images, Echo and the Bunnymen, ABC, Scritti Politti, The Ramone, Talking Heads, David Byrne, Talk Talk, B-52s, kd lang, Bjork, and more recently Mercury Rev, Elbow, Filthy Dukes, Rufus Wainwright, Blur, Kasabian, but tastes do vary widely and often, and a fondness for classical music is quite prevalent.
