About Cormac Kenevey

Singer Cormac Kenevey was born in Dublin and was introduced to jazz at a very early age by his pianist father. He took early influence from recordings of Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Weather Report, The Crusaders and Frank Sinatra amongst others. Cormac began studying classical clarinet at the age of 12 and subsequently was involved in many ensembles as a clarinettist including the Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. At University (while taking a degree in geography and archaeology) he became director and conductor of the UCD concert band. As a teenager he played drums and sang with the Dublin pop/rock band Milestone. Cormac spent two years studying jazz vocals in Munich with New York voice coach Allison Welles. At the age of 25 he decided to follow his heart and pack in the day job to become a professional jazz singer and record his debut album This Is Living which will be released on CANDID records in June. Kenevey performs regularly across Ireland and the UK captivating audiences with his unique blend of melodic phrasing and rhythmic ability. In 2005 he performed with this trio at the Cork Jazz Festival, Bray Jazz Festival, Wexford Festival, Marbella Festival (Spain) and many more venues across Ireland. Cormac Kenevey has built a well-earned reputation as a leading performer of both originals and the popular songbook. Though still in his twenties, his mature delivery and heartfelt interpretations display a great regard for those artists whom he cites as major influences. Mel Tormé, Frank Sinatra and Mark Murphy all feature, as well as the more contemporary influences of Kurt Elling and Al Jarreau. His debut album, This Is Living is a result of his collaboration with UK pianist Phil Ware and his Trio with whom Kenevey has developed a working live group. The repertoire chosen for the project is embellished by the newly written horn arrangements by Ware. As well as a selection of personal favorites, this collection features original compositions by Kenevey including the lead track Just a Day which explores narration over vocal groove layering. The record boasts an accomplished production crew including grammy® award-winning, mastering engineer, Bob Katz.
