About Child Of The Parish

Formed by London-born brothers Ben and Tom Vella, Child of the Parish is a project that offers a chance for escape, while still posing those all-consuming questions about time, memory, love and relationships. Sweet Surrender takes its cues from classic house and dance, from M83 to Daft Punk, melding those glitchy, electronic sounds with more organic elements of indie, disco and funk. Ben and Tom’s DIY attitude was inherited in part by their family’s musical background: both their granddad and their two great uncles worked in orchestras. Ben started out playing classical guitar before picking up the electric, and going on to find a variety of session work. Something of a renaissance man, he did everything from play the Arabic oud on a documentary about the war in Afghanistan to contribute disco riffs for a Kylie Minogue album. He and Tom–by this point an assured producer and DJ in his own right–joined forces, and picked up early attention from tastemakers such as The Line of Best Fit with their ambitious audio-visual debut. Having worked with such revered figures as remixer/producer Ewan Pearson [Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp], Child of the Parish felt confident on Sweet Surrender in self-producing. In a twist of fate, though ,they ended up being aided by award-winning mixer and engineer Shuta Shinoda [Hot Chip, Spiritualised, Daughter, Ghostpoet]. On Sweet Surrender, Child of the Parish have alchemised bliss. Give into it.
